I was so sad to hear the news that the beautiful Fenton War Memorial which pays tribute to the 498 men of Fenton who died in the First World War is under serious threat from Developers.
It is often said that if we fail to remember the past we are destined to repeat it. In our own uncertain times surely it’s more important than ever that we remember the appalling carnage of The First World War and honour the memory of those hundreds of thousands of men who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The final words of the hauntingly beautiful Ode of Rememberance which we repeat each November are ‘At the going down of the Sun and in the morning, we will remember them’. Perhaps next year we should add ‘until it becomes un profitable to do so’.
